Breastfeeding and Bra choice

Regardless of whether a woman continues breastfeeding after childbirth or not, wearing properly sized underwear is essential for overall breast health.

According to global statistics, only 20 out of 100 women wear bras of the correct size. The remaining women include 70% who wear bras that are smaller than their actual breast size and 10% who wear bras that are larger than appropriate. The problems caused by wearing tight bras during the postpartum period include the following:

Pain and burning sensations in the breasts

A feeling of fullness and heaviness in the breasts

Restriction of milk flow in certain areas of the breasts

Lumps and areas of hardness in the breasts

Blocked ducts and milk plugs

Mastitis and other complications resulting from engorgement and milk stasis

Experts note that during pregnancy and the postpartum period, an increase in breast size by one or two bra sizes is to be expected. For this reason, previously worn underwear may become completely unsuitable, either temporarily or permanently.

What to do:

Consult lingerie stores that accurately determine breast size; sales consultants in such stores are able to take correct measurements.

Give preference to breathable, natural colors and materials.

Choose bras without underwires that press into the breasts, cause discomfort, or create irritation.

Whenever possible, allow periods during the day and at night when the breasts are free from wearing a bra.

The chosen bra does not necessarily have to be specifically designed for breastfeeding mothers. Regular, comfortable underwear in the correct size is also suitable. In general, our article here provides more detailed information on comfortable clothing guidelines for breastfeeding mothers.
